Police detain man outside Colchester McDonald's over reports he was carrying knife

Essex Police was called to a McDonalds restaurant after reports that a man had a knife yesterday afternoon (Saturday, July 4). It had been reported by a member of the public that a man could be carrying a knife outside the Colchester High Street branch at around 3pm. Officers attended and detained a man after he refused to cooperate with them.

Witnesses report seeing a large police presence on the High Street in the afternoon. One member of the public reported seeing a man being held to the ground by officers. The police have said they detained him for the safety of the public and in order to appropriately search him.

No weapon was found on the man, and he was released with no further action.
