Maritime security and territorial records crucial, says Minister

Yin Soeum / Khmer Times Share: Defence Minister General Tea Banh, chairman of the National Committee for Maritime Security, has argued that front-line forces should be strengthened to prevent and suppress crimes on the high seas, and must compile a record of the historical names of the islands belonging to Cambodia.

Gen Banh, in an annual zoom meeting with the national committee for maritime security 2020 -2021 on Tuesday, said “for the sake of maritime security, headquarters must be strengthened”, in order to coordinate core operations with frontline staff and mixed forces. “We plan to crack down more effectively on crime that occurs in the maritime sphere, and we must list all of the islands under the sovereignty of Cambodia”, said Banh.

He has recommended that technical experts combine all documents naming islands in Khmer, and record them, in case of foreign incursion. Lieutenant General Suon Samnang, a committee member and chairman of the technical working group, showed the achievements of the committee in 2020-21. They have conducted a verified count of the islands and had it signed by the governors of Koh Kong, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot and Kep provinces.

He added that maritime forces were providing training in diving and environmental protection, and were expanding cooperation with national and international partners.
